Acrylic comparison with Glass

Acrylic comparison with glass

Acrylic and glass in comparison are two different products. Due to its higher labor cost and a tedious process to make glass more resistant to breakage it becomes extremely costly. This is not good as compared to consumer market that demands cheaper products with higher quality and availability.

When compared with Acrylic products glass is a very costly product and a lower life span. When a product is made in higher quantity the cost of production goes lower and with demand profit margins are lowered so that the consumer can choose that product.

Acrylic is very cost effective, because of lower labor work and easier to make as compared to glass. There are some major differences in between these products which makes one better than the other.

Weight Comparison

Acrylic is 50% lighter than Glass.

Impact resistance

Acrylic is 10-20 times stronger than glass, which make it more resistant to impact. When acrylic shatter in comparison to glass, it is in larger pieces as compared to glass which breaks into smaller pieces. Due to its lower weight it is much easier to work with.

Insulation

Acrylic insulates better than glass. It is much widely used in skylights, doors and divisions.

Manufacturing

Molding and extrusion of glass items are more expensive and requires much more energy.

Machining

Glass cannot be easily processed by sawing, milling and bending. It is a lot more difficult to change the shape of glass as compared to acrylic.

Scratch resistance

Glass is harder to scratch. Acrylic sheets can be supplied with a scratch-resistant coating (hard coating) which provides extra protection. While scratch-resistant acrylic is not nearly as scratch-resistant as glass. Small scratches in acrylic can be polished. Scratched glass must be replaced.

Light transmittance

Glass has 90% light transmission, for acrylic it is 92%. A small difference but its good to know that you can get better light transmittance for half the cost.

Gloss

Acrylic provides a softer reflection of light. It is very hard to know which one is which when compared side by side. Its nature to be mouldeded into higher quality gives acrylic much more variety as compared to glass.

UV light

Standard acrylic sheets allow UV light to pass. Glass however blocks the UV light. Acrylic sheets can also be delivered with a UV filter and still cost less than a standard glass.
